So I have now been to a handful of dessert venues since starting this blog with the intention of writing about each one. I quickly learned that visiting these places with my 16 month old makes it very difficult to focus on the food in front of me. Lucky for me, both my sisters independently brought me back cupcakes while in New York City this week. I had the opportunity to taste cupcakes side by side from New York City’s popular Magnolia Bakery and from the Cupcake Stop, the city’s first mobile cupcake shop.
From Magnolia, I tried the smores and pumpkin flavors. The smores sounded like a great idea but I did not really enjoy the marshmallow frosting. I guess that marshmallow goo just does not belong on top of a cupcake. As for the pumpkin, I tasted no pumpkin and only maple syrup.
From Cupcake Stop, I tried the coconut cream and chocolate on vanilla. The coconut cream had too much almond extract which takes away from the coconut. I did enjoy the vanilla cupcake. I think what is best about it is that the cake was not too sweet. The sweetness of the frosting was enough for the whole cupcake.
The lesson from this taste test? I need to compare apples to apples. I’d like to pick up a plain vanilla cupcake frosted with chocolate from 10 of New York City’s finest “cupcakeries” and compare them side by side. So tell me, where is your favorite New York City cupcake from?
