I was on a supply trip to New York Cake Baking Supply and had a half an hour to spare in the city before having to return home to pick up my son from daycare. I figured there must be some place nearby that I’ve been meaning to explore. So I looked up Limelight Marketplace. Lucky lucky, it was only a block away! Now, the only thing I knew (until today) about Limelight is that it was new and thanks to Twitter that Cupcake Stop sells cupcakes inside.
When I think of “marketplace”, chandeliers are not what comes to mind. The place was full of kiosks and booths but more in the style of a very posh mall than a marketplace. I didn’t mind it, I was just surprised by the ambiance. Since I was short on time, I headed straight for the “sweet room” an area dedicated to sweets vendors. I wish I had more time to explore (and a camera other than iPhone!) but here’s what I learned on this unplanned visit:

1. First stop, The Little Candy Cake Company. These are handcrafted, little miniature wedding cakes made from chocolate. I did not get to taste them but they did look cute and delicious. My first thought was that they would make a very unique wedding favor. They do custom orders and also make lollipops out of them.
2. Moving next door, I stopped at Mari’s New York. Mari’s sells brownies and just brownies. Buy a box of their six signature brownies (Classic (or Classic with Nuts), Caramel Sea Salt, Coconut, Thai Coffee, Heat, and Blonde Bombshell) or you can just pick one up individually like I did! I went for the caramel sea salt…so good and just the right amount of caramel, chocolate and saltiness. I did not have one, but the sales person also explained to me that they serve flavored coffees that match their brownie flavors.
3. Whisk is a cookware store based in Brooklyn. This little booth was full of gadgets and things to dress up your table. It definitely made me want to visit their main shop. I discovered a new dessert gadget here but I will write another post about it…
4. Butterfly Bakeshop had the most delicious looking cakes and cookies in their window. Again, wish I had more time!! Next visit, I will definitely have to try something.
5. At the end of the row was Baci’s Gelato. I was thinking it was a little early in the morning for gelato but the sales person was super nice and kept offering me tastes of the gelato flavors. I highly recommend the Ferrero…tasted just like the chocolate candy.
Unfortunately, I was out of time at this point. I quickly went back to Cupcake Stop and picked up some cupcakes to take back home. (The nutella crunch is really good!) I missed out on Wannahavacookie, a whoopie pie and cookie shop, as well as the savory specialty food shops. Limelight definitely needs a revisit!
